Most Nepali students begin their studies in Japan at a Japanese language school, and schools usually ask for proof of Japanese at around N5 level before they apply for your visa. The two tests you will hear about most are the JLPT and the NAT-TEST. Both are widely accepted, but they differ in how often they run and how quickly results arrive, and that can decide which intake you make.

The JLPT
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test is run by the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services (JEES). It has five levels, from N5 (basic) to N1 (advanced), and tests vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening. Every question is multiple choice; there is no speaking or writing section.
The JLPT is held twice a year, on the first Sunday of July and of December, although some cities outside Japan hold only one of the two. Results come out about two months after the test, and certificates never expire.
The NAT-TEST
The Japanese Language NAT-TEST follows the same format: vocabulary and grammar, reading and listening, all multiple choice. Its five levels, 5Q to 1Q, line up with JLPT N5 to N1, so a 5Q certificate is the equivalent of N5.
The big difference is frequency. The NAT-TEST runs six times a year, about every two months, and its results arrive within a few weeks.

Which one should you take?
- Take the NAT-TEST if your intake is close. With a test every couple of months and quicker results, it is the easier way to have a certificate ready for your school’s deadline.
- Take the JLPT if you are planning beyond language school. Universities, colleges and employers in Japan know the JLPT best, and many ask for N2 or N1.
- Or take both. Many students sit the NAT-TEST for their application, then the JLPT once they reach a higher level.
Whichever test you choose, you are building the same skills. Our JLPT N5 and JLPT N4 & NAT-TEST classes cover both formats, so you can decide on the test closer to your deadline. Talk to our counsellors about which one fits your intake.
